The aim of this article is discuss open access. Please feel free to leave your comments and thoughts. I've written an initial article discussing it.

Definitions

There seems to be a lot of confusion over what constitutes open science vs open access (well, I'm confused). Does somebody want to clarify? - Euan

I don't think that there are formal or even agreed definitions. To me, open access is a publishing term covering availability of journal articles, open science describes the practice of conducting all of your research (results, plans, grant applications) in public. However, some people seem to use open research for the latter and open science to cover both open access and open research… - Neil

From my point of view I agree with Neil, open access means journal articles that are freely available and do not require a subscription. Open science means making results, figures, and data freely available while you are in the process of working toward your next paper. I think use of the name “Open Notebook Science” which Heather Piwowar uses is a more descriptive. - Mike

Road Map

I think initially this needs points of view from journals and funding bodies. I don't know how easy it will be to get these, but I think it would be worth a try. I also think it would worth while getting commentary from scientists already practising open science.

First Goal - Journal polices towards open access

Pedro Beltrao posted a list of journal policies towards preprint servers in June 2006. I've repeated this search and posted the updated list in Journal preprint server policies.

The Romeo database was pointed out to me as containing comprehensive listings of journal pre/post print policies. I've updated the Journal preprint server policies page - Mike.

Four Journal personal website publication policies were received after sending them the Open Science Information Request email.

Second Goal - Funding body polices towards open access

Anyone fancy doing this?

Third Goal - Anecdotal evidence

I think it would be good to get contributions from people already involved in carry research openly and transparently. Two that come to mind are Rosie Redfield and Jean-Claude Bradley.

Current Goal - I'm going to start harassing people by email again.

Open Science Opinions

Fourth Goal - Open access projects

There are also collaborative science projects such as the science commons and synaptic leap. Including commentary on their thoughts and objectives would be interesting.
